27th Annual Woods Trail Run

Race Information

Race Distances:  5,020m for High School and 2,715m for Junior High races 

High School Races: There will be five seed races for each gender. We expect that all coaches will enter their athletes in the appropriate seed race. The goal is to permit comparibly skilled runners to the opportunity to compete against each other. The individual seed race awards give a wider range of athletes a chance to win awards. If we end up with too many athletes in certain seed races, meet management reserves the right to adjust the sizes of each seed race.

Junior High School Races: There will be two Junior High School races - one for the boys and one for the girls.  

Team Scoring: Once all of the races have been completed, all of the results will be compiled together to arrive at team scores. The first seven runners for each team, based on time, will be used for scoring.

Results: Complete race results will be posted at www.lancertiming.com immediately upon the completion of the last race.

Awards: Awards will be given for individual races, for overall performances, and for team results.

Time Schedule: The first race will be at 10:30 AM, starting with the Girls' Junior High School race, followed by the Boys' Junior High Race. The High School races will follow, alternating between Girls and Boys. See the Schedule of Events for details.

Spikes: High School runners may wear cross country spikes (up to 1/2"). Junior High School runners may NOT wear spikes.

Grade Divisions: High School races are for athletes in 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grades only. Junior High School races are for athletes in 6th, 7th, and 8th grades only. Please do NOT enter anyone lower than 6th grade. Junior High runners CANNOT run in the High School races.

Sanctioning for High Schools: This event is sanctioned by the National Federation of State High School Associations for high school competitors from the states of Connecticut, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Maine, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Vermont. High schools in those states must be members in good standing of their state's affiliate of the NFHS to compete in the Woods Trail Run. If your high school is not a member of your state's affiliate, the only way your school may participate is to get permission or a waiver from your state's affiliate or from the Vermont Principals' Association. In many cases, private schools can receive such a waiver. (Note: Schools that are not a member of their state's affiliate of the NFHS should contact Dave McGinn prior to submitting any online entries.)  

Sanctioning for Junior High Schools: The NFHS does not sanction any events for junior high schools. Any junior high school runner in the 6th, 7th, or 8th grade may compete.

Hydration: In accordance with new NFHS protocol for distance running events, water will be available to runners at the midpoint of the race (flat at the west end of the softball field).

Entry Information

Entries: All entries for the 2017 Woods Trail Run will be done online with final entries submitted on DIRECT ATHLETICS. Our goal, in order to continue the tradition of hosting a top-quality cross country event, will be to limit the total High School entries in this year's Woods Trail Run to approximately 1800 athletes. It is highly recommended that you get your entries and your entry fees in as soon as possible.

Online entries will be accepted until 5:00 PM on Monday, September 18th for teams that have made reservations and have been added to the meet on Direct Athletics. The Academy must make every attempt to cap this event around 1800 runners.  Although the entry deadline is 9/18, when registration numbers reach that plateau registration/entries will be closed.  So register early, and please do not inflate your registrations, maximizing the number of programs available to enter.

As with last year, we will accept entry reservations starting in mid-August. This gives coaches the opportunity to reserve a certain number of slots in either the High School or Junior High School races without having to submit actual names. A reservation gives you the opportunity to make sure that your entries are covered in the event that we reach our entry limits earlier than the deadline. Please note that you are not required to make an early reservation but it might be in your best interest to do so.

School, Number of High School entries by gender and/or number of Junior High School by gender.


Once we receive your email, we will add your team(s) to the meet in DIRECT ATHLETICS and send you an email confirmation within 4-8 hours. You can then do your actual entries at any time prior to the September 18th entry deadline.

NOTE: Only authorized coaches and athletic directors are allowed to do entries!
